How to use the Scoresheet?

What is the Scoresheet?

The scoresheet module allows the creation of scoresheets using the available data in STAC. Users can create multiple scoresheets to facilitate evaluating the outcome when different charges are used.

The basic scoresheet wizard uses the data of a selected case, and it also lists charges from any previous cases where the defendant was found guilty. It is possible to list the charges of any additional open case for circuits where a defendant may have multiple open cases instead of all charges being consolidated in a single case.

When it is time for a user to create a scoresheet there are 3 options. All the options are available in the right click menu on the Scoresheet tab.

FieldDescription
New ScoresheetThis creates a new scoresheet for the case; this will include any prior charges in Section IV from all cases that the person was charged with if the case has been closed. If the person has multiple cases open, it will find all of their current charges and it will be in Section II
Import from other caseUsers can import a previous scoresheet and the other charges whether the case is open or closed will show in the prior charges (Section IV)
Duplicate ScoresheetMakes a duplicated scoresheet, where users can edit the values and save a new separate Scoresheet
Info
STAC has a field called Exclude from Scoresheet on the Statute code table. The intention of this field was to Exclude VOP charges from the Scoresheet. Users can achieve this by going to the Statute code table and find Statute 948.06 for VOPs and through the configurations they can check the box and Exclude the VOP charges from the Scoresheet and in result this will force STAC to present the previous set of charges in the Scoresheet instead.
Alert
If a charge is added to a case after a VOP was added to the case, STAC will NOT add the charges that were added after the VOP to the Scoresheet. Stac will only add the previous sequence of charges that occurred before the VOP was added to a case.
Info
When users are creating a new scoresheet, it will grab the lesser included charge when it is available.

How to use the Scoresheet?

To create a Scoresheet go to: Scoresheet tab > Add or Scoresheet tab > Right click menu > Create new Scoresheet

The Scoresheet tab is where users should edit the information related to the Scoresheet. Users can edit the max sentence, charge sentence, etc.

The right click menu allows users to edit, delete, add a comment, edit the scoresheet sentence, etc.

How to edit Scoresheet Sentence?

The option in the Scoresheet tab is used to edit the Scoresheet max sentence after the scoresheet is created.

If the user wants to update a charge sentence, they should select the pencil icon next to the charge they would like to update. The charge sentence can be found and edited on the detail section of the screen.

How to edit the Scoresheet?

If a user needs to edit the Scoresheet they can go to the Scoresheet tab, select the Scoresheet they need to edit, and select Edit. This will take the user through the Scoresheet wizard and go through each page, in the correct order to easily add or edit the data.
Info
If the user only needs to update the Max sentence or the charge sentences, then they should use the Option Edit Scoresheet Sentence or the Charge Sentence on the Detail section. The user does NOT have to go through the entire Scoresheet Wizard to update the max sentence.

This first section is for the Primary Offense. This screen has the Defendant and case information as well as the primary offense information.

We then select next and move onto the next section which is responsible for the Additional Offense(s). The user can add new charges, delete old charges, or edit the current charges they see on the screen by selecting the pencil icon next to the charge.

This next section is responsible for the Victim Injury Section. Here we can add the victim injury information if it pertains to the case.

After we select next, we get to the next section which is responsible for Prior records. Prior records signify when a case has been closed and the person in question has already been convicted of a crime. Users can add other charges, edit current charges, or remove charges from this list. Once the prior records are all in this list, we can select next.

The next screen is related to the Legal Status Violations, users can choose the check boxes that pertains to the case.

The next screen is related to the Community Sanction.

The next section 7 and 8, which are related to weapon and the flag for a prior serious felony.

The next section is for Enhancements but only if the primary offense qualifies for an Enhancement.

The final screen is to show the Sentence Computation.

Then, the user can select Save and the scoresheet will be saved in the Scoresheet tab. Users can go back to edit the scoresheet in the Scoresheet tab at any time.
Alert
If there is NO value in the User defined sentence, then the Sentence in years will be used on the Scoresheet. However, the User defined value will override the Max sentence, if it is included.

The new way to print the Scoresheet is by going to the Scoresheet Tab > select the correct scoresheet > Report > Scoresheet

Idea
If the scoresheet is printing on multiple pages, users can fix the margins to be narrower, and it should fit the page correctly

Additional Offenses (Section II) vs Prior Records (Section IV)

The scoresheet is calculated by taking multiple factors into account and then assigning each factor a numerical value. The charges are given a value depending on the severity of the offense. The scoresheet also uses additional offenses and prior records to calculate the total amount of points. Additional offenses are any offense other than the primary offense in which the offender has not yet been charged. The offender may have multiple cases open simultaneously. The additional offenses will be brought into the scoresheet when starting a New Scoresheet. Prior records are also used in the scoresheet calculation and they occur when a case has been closed and the person in question has already been convicted of a crime. This information is important because if the convicted person has prior records they will have a higher chance of getting a prison sentence.
