How to Sentence a Case?

Introduction

After a defendant pleads guilty, a judge will decide on the appropriate sentencing.

STAC allows users to keep track of the defendant's sentence, by allowing users to add a sentence to a case after it is disposed. Once a case is closed users can go through the Sentence Wizard or through the Sentence tab in the case to add the appropriate sentence to the case.

How to sentence a case?

Cases can only be Sentenced once they are closed!

Cases can be sentenced in 2 ways:
1. Sentence Wizard
2. Sentence Tab

How to use the Sentence Wizard?

Once a case is closed, users can use the Sentence wizard to add a case’s sentence, if there is not already a Sentence on the case. If the case was already sentenced users must go to the Sentence tab in the case to edit or add more sentences.

To access the wizard, go to: Right click on the case in the case list > Sentence Case

The user will go through the wizard screens filling out the required information. The wizard consists of 3 sections:
  1. Details
  2. Sentences
  3. Events (optional)
Details:
The First Screen is where users enter the Sentence Date and have the option to add an Archive box # and a comment. 
Sentence:
At least one sentence is required in order to save.
Once users add a sentence, they can use the right click menu to edit the charges related to the sentence and also add a special code.

By default, the sentence is assigned to ALL charges, the user can then edit it and remove the unrelated charges in the Sentence Tab.
Events: 
The Event section is optional. It allows the user to add any extra events to the case during the sentence process. 

What information is required to save a Sentence to a case?

The Sentence date and at least one sentence is required to save a Sentence to a case.

How to use the Sentence Tab?

Users always have access to the Sentence tab during a case. As long as they have the security clearance to see the sentence tab.

InfoThe case will need to be closed or reopened for users to be able to use the Sentence tab. 
Users can view, edit, add, add/remove charges, add/remove special codes all from the Sentence Tab. 

How to add a Special Code?

To add a special code to the Sentence, select the charge > Right click menu > Add Special Code.

The Special Codes allows user to add a special code to the Sentence. The administrator will create the Special codes that their circuit uses, and the users will be able to easily add that code in the Sentence wizard.

If a Sentence has a Special code assigned, users can view and delete the Special code in the right-side panel of the Sentence Tab.

How to add charges to a Sentence?

To add a charge to a sentence, Select the charge > Right click menu > Add Charge.

By default, the sentence is assigned to ALL charges, the user can then edit it and remove the unrelated charges.

How to Remove a charge from the Sentence?

To remove a charge users should go to the side panel on the right of the screen, select on Charges and use the trash icon to delete a charge that is not related to the Sentence. 
If a Charge is removed by mistake, the user is able to add it back to the Sentence through the right click menu.
