How to dispose a case?

What is the disposition wizard?

The Disposition Wizard is used to close a case once the final outcome is known. It performs the following actions:
  • Creates a Disposition Event Record
  • Disposes all open charges in the case
To access the disposition wizard, right click on the case in the case list > Dispose case

Alert
The wizard should only be used to dispose of the entire case (i.e., all remaining charges). To dispose of individual charges, use the Charge Tab > Charge Maintenance.

Disposal Options Supported by the Wizard

There are four main ways to dispose of charges in a case using the Disposition Wizard:
1. All Charges Same Disposition
2. Some Charges Different Disposition
3. Each Charge Unique Disposition
4. Disposing Cases in a Consolidated Case

All charges same disposition

Use this method when all charges are resolved in the same way.

Action:

The user will go through the wizard and add the following information:

  • Disposition Date

  • Disposition Action

  • Disposition Reason (if required by action type)
  • Review the charges

  • Add any addition events (optional)

 Outcome:

  • All charges receive the same disposition values

  • Case is updated to a case status of closed

  • Disposition Event is added to the Event tab

Some Charges have different dispositions
Use this option when some charges have one or more different disposition values.

There are 2 options in this case:
1. Go to the Charge tab and dispose of the single charges on their own
2. Go through the Disposition wizard and in the charge section update each charge to the correct disposition date, action, and reason

If using the Disposition wizard, then ALL charges must be disposed!
Action for disposition wizard:
The user will go through the wizard and add the following information:
  • Disposition Date, Action, and Reason

  • Review the charges and update the charges that have a different dates or values

  • Add any addition events (optional)

 Outcome:

  • All charges receive the disposition values defined for each charge 

  • Case is updated to a case status of closed

  • Disposition Event is added to the Event tab

Each charge unique disposition
Use this option when all charges have different disposition values.

There are 2 options in this case:
1. Go to the Charge tab and dispose of the single charges on their own until one charge remains open
2. Go through the Disposition wizard and in the charge section update each charge to the correct disposition date, action, and reason

If using the Disposition wizard, then ALL charges must be disposed!

Disposing cases in a consolidated case
Use this option when disposing charges for a consolidated case.
When a consolidated case is selected and has multiple open cases consolidated, when users open the Disposition Wizard, they will have an addition screen called Incidents to choose which cases should be disposed.

If there are two cases that are consolidated, but in the disposition wizard the user choses only 1 incident. Then only the Case selected will be disposed the other cases and its related charges will not be affected. 
Action:
The user will go through the wizard and add the following information:
  • Choose which incidents should be disposed (all cases or individual cases)

  • Disposition Date, Action, and Reason

  • Review the charges and update the charges that have a different dates or values

  • Add any addition events (optional)

 Outcome:

  • All charges receive the disposition values defined for each charge

  • Only the selected case (e.g., Defendant B) is disposed

  • Other consolidated cases remain unaffected

  • Disposition Event is added to the Event tab
