Why consolidate a case with multiple defendants?
The multi-defendant consolidation is a very complex process. It is more complex than a single defendant because the other cases associated do not get closed, but all the cases are linked together to act as if they are a single case.
To make all the cases that were consolidated appear to be one case, all the other consolidated cases will have the same information as the main case because they are acting as one single case. It is important to remember that consolidating cases with multiple defendants will not close the other cases that were part of the consolidation process.
The case number changes to match the main case and the other cases will have the same case number but a different defendant letter, and that is how the cases are differentiated.
Some functions, like the Add event or Add relationship, behave differently and give users the option to add a new event to all consolidated cases or to only one of the cases attached to the consolidated case.
